The Basics of Essential Oils

Essential pine oil

What Are Essential Oils?

Did you know essential oils are all around us? Have you ever picked up pine needles, fresh herbs, or a peppermint leaf and rubbed them between your fingers? The smell they leave on your hand is the essential oil of the plant! Essential oils are the aromatic liquids of the plant. Oils consist of over 100 different natural, organic compounds. They are distilled from shrubs, bushes, trees, flowers, roots, rinds, resins, and seeds. Because of the distillation process, they are much more concentrated and more potent than dried herbs.

How Do They Work?

Essential oils are the most powerful part of the plant, often referred to as the “blood” of the plant. They circulate through the plant and carry nutrients in, while transporting waste and toxins out. They regulate the plants function, and are the plants immune system. They protect the plant from harmful threats – such as viruses, parasites, and bacteria. They oxygenate the cells, and help regulate function.

Essential oils do similar things in the human body. They can provide support for every system in the body. They support brain health, and can aid your immune system. They can support every organ, and are also used extensively for emotions.

How Are They Used?

There are three ways to use essential oils:

Topically – rub it on your skin

Aromatically – inhaling or diffusing

Internally – in a gelatin capsule, adding a couple drops to food or drink, or directly under your tongue

Do Essential Oils Work?

The answer is yes, however, it is important to note that all essential oils are not created equally. You have probably noticed that you can pick up essential oils just about anywhere these days:  bulk food stores, farmers markets, even Wal-Mart carries them. In the United States, there is no rating system for essential oils. The closest we get is an FDA requirement which states that in order to label a bottle of essential oils as “pure”, “therapeutic grade”, or “organic”, the contents of the bottle must contain at least 5% essential oil. That means 95% can be carriers, chemical extenders, or solvents, and that is totally legal under US law. That is why is it so important to go with integrity, and to trust the company you are working with.

I only use Young Living Essential Oils. Young Living is the World Leader in essential oils, and has set the standard for purity in the essential oil marketplace. They are the only company with Seed to Seal. It is their promise of purity. Check it out here.

Are They Safe?

There are certain oils that are photosensitive, so don’t put them on and go outside right away. Those are mostly the citrus oils like grapefruit, lemon, or bergamot.

When using on your skin, always watch for redness and dilute with a carrier oil (like oilive oil, coconut oil, or Young Livings V6 oil)

Always dilute when using on children because their skin is more permeable and absorbs the oils more quickly. The bottoms of the feet are my favorite place to put oils on children.

Do not put essential oils directly in your ears.

Use caution putting them near your eyes. Some oils can cause a burning sensation, like peppermint. Use a Q-Tip instead of tipping the bottle towards your face.
